I'm just curious. I've met more than one person who has taken the chain off and let their plastic PTO driveline shields rotate. The argument for disconnecting the chain goes something like this...."the bearings in the shield wear out easily and they're expensive to replace".

I, personally, continue to secure the chain to the tractor (which prevents the shield from rotating). But, I'm curious if others have heard this argument and whether it holds any truth.

I would think our machines running commercially each rack up more hours in a month than the average user would in a lifetime.

I can't recall ever having a PTO shaft guard wear out.

Then again, we do silly things like greasing them every day just as you're supposed to.

Best of luck. ....

I would think that if you greased it even occasionally (they do have plastic greasing nipples molded into the guard) that the nylon bearings would last forever. I think people just don't take the time to set up the anti-rotation chains. They can be a pain to get connected and adusted the first time, but after that, I don't find them much of a hassle.

Good luck,
Bill ....
